PAINTING STEEL CARPORTS AND SECURITY BARS

Determining your product requirement:

  • Measure area to which paint is to be
  • Depending on surface to which the product is to be applied, determine which products are needed. (Refer to Product Specifier Tool)
  • Check the Theoretical Spread Rates (TSR) on each of the specified products and see how many coats of each are recommended, then calculate what quantities of each product you will require, remembering to make adjustments for the porosity of each TSRs are based on products applied to smooth, sealed surfaces.
  • Check out the specifications on all the top coat choices (referring to the relevant data sheets) and decide which is right for

RAW MILD STEEL

Surface Preparation Mild Steel (New)

  1. Remove all grease and oil using Paintcor’s
  2. Sand or shot blast all steel back to bright metal (removing all mill scale and rust). Remove all sanding
  3. Paintcor’s Ruscon rust converter can be used on rust instead of sanding or shot blasting back to bright metal,

please see tutorial 21 on Treating Rust.

Application Method

  1. Apply 2 coats EnviroPrime or 1 coat AllPrime Plus to exposed mild steel Allow to dry between coats.
  2. Apply 1 coat of Paintcor’s UniSub Universal Undercoat. Allow to dry. UniSub is only necessary when finishing in the colour white or a very light colour.
  3. Finally apply 2 top coats of your choice. Elegance or EnviroCoat (water based), HiGlo, LoGlo or EnduraCoat (solvent based). EnviroCoat is best recommended for Exterior

NEW GALVANIZED IRON

Surface Preparation

  1. Degrease the new galvanising using Paintcor’s GrimeReaper and rinse Allow to dry.
  2. Remove all white rust (if present) buy washing with spirit Rinse well and allow to dry.

Application Method

  1. Apply 1 coat of EnviroPrime in highveld conditions or 1 coat of AllPrime Plus in coastal conditions to all sheeting to be Allow to dry
  2. Apply 2 top coats of your (RuvAcryl, EnviroCoat, Elegance) Allow to dry between coats

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED

Surface Preparation Mild Steel

  1. Remove all loose peeling
  2. Wash old paint to remove all dirt and Allow to dry.
  3. Where paint has been removed back to bare metal, sand metal to a bright finish, and sand edges of scar to
  4. If finished in enamel then sand the enamel to a clean matt Remove sanding dust.

Application Method

  1. Apply 1 coat AllPrime Plus to exposed mild steel Allow to dry between coats.
  2. Apply 1 coat of Paintcor’s UniSub Universal Undercoat to primed areas only, or to the entire surface if it is previously finished in Enamel or if changing a very dark colour to white or a light pastel Allow to dry.
  3. Finally apply 2 top coats of your choice. Elegance or EnviroCoat (water based), HiGlo, LoGlo or EnduraCoat (solvent based)

Note: Enamels do not last well under harsh UV conditions, it is their nature to chalk and fade after 2 to 3 years, for best long-lasting results on Exterior applications, finish with Paintcor’s EnviroCoat.

Galvanized Iron Surface Preparation

  1. Remove all loose peeling
  2. Wash old paint down to remove all dirt and Allow to dry.
  3. If there is rust on the exposed galvanizing then sand the rust back to bright Remove sanding dust.

Application Method

  1. Apply 1 coat of AllPrime Plus to exposed galvanized Allow to dry.
  2. Finally apply 2 top coats of your choice. RuvAcryl, Elegance or EnviroCoat (water based), HiGlo, LoGlo or EnduraCoat Enamel (Solvent based).

Note: Enamels do not last well under harsh UV conditions, it is their nature to chalk and fade after 2 to 3 years, for best long-lasting results on Exterior applications, finish with Paintcor’s RuvAcryl, Elegance or EnviroCoat.
